Pre-K Celebrates National Family Literacy Month
The Remsen Elementary pre-K class celebrated National Family Literacy Month during November to help strengthen the connection between reading at school and home.
The class read several books by author Mo Willems, including “Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” and “Don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!,” and also listened to and watched different stories from YouTube on their classroom Smart Board.
To extend the lesson beyond the classroom, materials were sent home to parents and they were asked to have their children create a new story about the pigeon. Each student became both the author and illustrator of their own pigeon story with a little help from their family. Students and parents learned more about author Mo Willems by Googling the stories at home and watching video clips on YouTube.
The student’s completed stories were posted on my bulletin board outside of the pre-K classroom and pigeons made from their handprints were displayed on the classroom door.
The children and their families had a great time reading and working on the project together!
