12/1/17 - "Wonder" Field Trip
On December 1, fifth and sixth graders from Remsen Elementary visited the Strand Theatre in Old Forge to see a screening of the movie “Wonder” on its opening day.
The students had previously read the New York Times Bestselling children’s novel “Wonder by R. J. Palacio, and the field trip to see the film adaptation was a wonderful culminating experience for the lesson.
Both the book and film follow ten-year-old August "Auggie" Pullman who was born with a severe cranio-facial deformity that has made it difficult for him to make friends. Auggie enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. Wonder begins from Auggie's point of view, but soon switches to include the perspectives of his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend and others. As his family, his new classmates and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's journey unites them and teaches lessons of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship and kindness.
