11/17/17 - 3rd Grade Trout in the Classroom

Third graders at Remsen Elementary are participating in the Trout in the Classroom program sponsored by Trout Unlimited, a national conservation organization focused on protecting and restoring North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program in which students in grades k-12:
- raise trout from eggs to fry.
- monitor tank water quality.
- engage in stream habitat study.
- learn to appreciate water resources.
- begin to foster a conservation ethic.
- grow to understand ecosystems.
Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed.
Remsen Elementary recently received 800 brook trout eggs from the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and presently have about 700 small fry in the large aquarium located in the Elementary media center. The third graders are responsible for checking the water temperature, water clarity and the proper operation of the aquarium equipment. The students also feed, count and keep track of the number of live fry.
This week, Gary Bartell, a member of Trout Unlimited, spoke to the third graders about the different species of trout, their needs, habitats and diets. Mr. Bartell also brought live aquatic insects to show to the students.
