Dear Remsen Community,

At the beginning of February our school community experienced a loss that no child or parent should ever have to experience. The passing of our dear student, Rykah, was a devastating tragedy that will hurt indefinitely, but with time, we will be able to celebrate the wonderful memories that Rykah created for every person that had the privilege of meeting him. Rykah’s presence in each of our lives, and the fond memories we are left with, can and should be used for good.

Rykah’s passing at such a young age also reminds us of one of our RCS Core Values: Every day is a gift. This is one of our District’s core values as we aspire to instill in each other, in our students, and in our community members, to never take any day, or any person, for granted. I challenge all of us, in memory of Rykah, and in memory of all those who we hold dear in our hearts; to live life like it matters. To live every day with purpose, kindness, curiosity, and grace. To take personal pride in a hard day’s work. To be decent, honest human beings, willing to help others with an understanding that things won’t always go our way. To be okay with an opposing point of view and maybe even consider multiple perspectives. To respect ourselves and each other. I challenge us all to make leading by positive example the rule and not the exception. Consider giving more and taking less. To be more thoughtful and less impulsive when we speak, react, or interact. Less posting on social media, more sharing of civility. To not wait until someone passes before we share everything that is good about them or to thank them for the difference they made in the world, and in our lives. We should be sharing those thoughts while we are present with them in the moment. And, most of all, strive to be the kind of person that will inspire others to be better people themselves. Life is much too short to live any other way.

Rykah’s parents have a great deal to be proud of in the hard working, thoughtful young man they raised, that touched the lives of so many others in the short 16 years that he was with us. Rykah was a happy kid that appreciated hard work and having fun. May his positive attitude and sense of humor serve as inspiration to enjoy every day and to live life to the fullest.

Before closing, it is important to recognize a hero among us. One of Rykah’s best friends, Andrew, was the first person that set out looking for Rykah, and ended up being the first individual on the scene of the tragic accident. Andrew is to be commended for his bravery, quick thinking, and courageous attempt to save Rykah’s life. There are also several other students, parents, and first responders that are to be thanked for all they did that evening and beyond. Time and again, the Remsen community and our surrounding neighbors come together to help and support each other when we need it most. Thank you to everyone.

As always, it is an honor and a privilege to be your Superintendent.
