Hello Families!
I am very excited about our upcoming school year!  The ability to engage my students in thought provoking questions, through literature is one of the highlights of my day!  I will be your child's teacher of Language, Literature, and Social Studies. I will also work with many of our students to be more fluent in English Languare Arts, through our Response to Intervention, RTI, program. For those who do not know me, I have worked for Remsen for 19 years.  I have learned so much from the young adults I am honored to work with.  When I am not teaching, I am spending time with my daughter, Grace, and husband Jerry.  We are blessed with many friends we consider family, and enjoy spending as much times as possible with all of them. I love to laugh, and share stories.  I believe children learn from their mistakes, and need many opportunites to grow from their decisions.  Children are amazing, I am blessed to call teaching my life's work.
Sixth grade is a busy year with many new concepts to learn. In Language Arts, we prepare our students to be more effective readers and writers as they'll be exposed to multipe genres. Students will also participate in literature groups while focusing on a deeper understanding of the content, through group conversations, and applied skills. Students will have ample opportunites to read and discuss novels as well as nonfiction pieces tied to the curriculum. In Social Studies, we explore a variety of ancient cultures and civilizations.  Sixth grade is an exciting time as students emerge as "middle schoolers" with unique social, emotional, and academic characteristics.  I look forward to working with your child to prepre them for the transition to middle school!  Parent support will be greatly appreciated throughout the school year.  I believe that a consistent line of communication betewen school and home is the best way to ensure students are constantly striving to achieve.
I am really looking forward to a great school year!  I hope our children have a risk free, exciting educational experience, that is full of memories! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at mhollenbeck@remsencsd.org.  This email is checked daily.

Warmly,
Mary Hollenbeck
