Hello Families!
I am very excited about our upcoming school year!  The ability to engage my students in thought provoking questions, through mathematical exploration, is one of the highlights of my day!  I will be your child's teacher of Math, Social Studies, and Science. I will also work with our students to be more fluent in mathematical reasoning, through our Response to Intervention, RTI, program. For those who do not know me, I have worked for Remsen for 24 years.  I have learned so much from the young adults I am honored to work with.  When I am not teaching, I spend time with my daughter, Grace, and husband, Jerry.  We are blessed with many friends we consider family, and enjoy spending as much time as possible with all of them. I love to laugh and share stories.  I believe children learn from their mistakes, and need many opportunities to grow from their decisions.  Children are amazing. I am blessed to call teaching my life's work.
Sixth grade is a busy year with many new concepts to learn. In Math, we prepare our students to be more effective problem solvers. They'll be given strong support in a student-centered, differentiated environment. Students will also participate in actively building new knowledge from prior mathematical experiences, while implementing critical reasoning and higher level thinking skills.  This will provide a focus on a deeper understanding of the content, through group conversations, and applied skills. Students will have ample opportunities to practice, in whole and small groups, as well as one on one time with me. In Social Studies, we explore a variety of ancient cultures and civilizations. Science will allow our minds to construct an attitude of inquiry in the world around us, excite and explore the relationships of science to society, technology, mathematics and other disciplines.  Sixth grade is an exciting time as students emerge as "middle schoolers" with unique social, emotional, and academic characteristics.  I look forward to working with your child to prepare them for the transition to middle school!  Parent support will be greatly appreciated throughout the school year.  I believe that a consistent line of communication between school and home is the best way to ensure students are constantly striving to achieve.
I am really looking forward to a great school year!  I hope our children have a risk-free, exciting educational experience that is full of memories! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at mhollenbeck@remsencsd.org.  This email is checked daily.

Warmly,
Mary Hollenbeck
