Cyberbullying Tips for Parents
Prevention Tips for Parents when it comes to Cyberbullying and Electronic Devices
One of the questions educators have been asking themselves and those they work with is: How can cyber-bullying be prevented? This seems to be a very complex and confusing question. Children and teenagers are “plugged in.” It seems that most of them have some type of electronic device. These devices could be a smart phone, a tablet, laptop, gaming system, and some have multiple devices to access the internet on. Using any of these devices, children and teens can connect to the internet and access to social media, e-mail, websites, instant messaging, and texting.
What can parents do to prevent cyberbullying? Parents can begin a dialogue with children about internet usage and responsibility. Parents can venture into cyberspace with their kids and show an interest in their child’s internet activity. This can help them monitor the child’s electronic activity and show that parents care about online safety.
When can parents begin? Earlier is always better. Small children have and will be exposed to electronic devices. Once that child picks up an electronic device and starts using it, start talking with your child. Start by talking about online behavior, internet safety, and internet security. Parents may need to initiate conversation about internet safety and appropriate internet etiquette. Talk with children and teens about internet scams, cyber-bullying, privacy, and safety. Use these conversations as a way kick start a conversation about your parental expectations of electronic device use.
Be patient when discussing electronic devices and issues related to them. Keep the lines of communication with your children open. Children and teens need to hear the information repeatedly, but do it in small doses.
