Syllabus Overview: Topics in Geometry
Topics in Geometry is a non-regents math course that covers all of the topics of Regents Geometry with less depth. The class culminates in a local final as opposed to a NYS Regents Exam. Unit 1: Basics of Geometry: Lines, points, distance and midpoint formulas, angle types and relationships, basic constructions
Unit 2: Transformations and Rigid Motions: Reflections, Translations, Rotations, Dilations, Symmetry, etc.
Unit 3: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines: Parallel lines and transversals, angles and parallel lines, slopes, equations of lines, etc.
Unit 4: Congruent Triangles: Classifying triangles, Angles of triangles, Isosceles and Equilateral triangles, Triangle congruence: SSS , SAS, ASA, AAS, HL, Pythagorean Theorem, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, etc.
Unit 5: Circles: Area and circumference, Chords and arcs, inscribed angles, tangents, equation of circles, etc.
Unit 6: Volume and Surface Area: Volume of cubes, prisms, cylinders, and spheres
Classroom Rules-Respect! I expect all of my students to treat each other with respect and courtesy – no name calling, no put-downs, etc.
-No horseplay! Students are expected to act in a calm manner at all times to prevent distractions and possible accidents in the shop.
-Be Prompt & Prepared for Class! Be in the class room, prepared for class, when the bell rings.-Any school wide behavior policy is expected to be followed. This means no cell phones!
-Pet Peeves (avoid these behaviors!): Lying, students talking when I am talking, students not listening, rudeness
Expectations
All students are expected to:
-Try your best at every assignment!
-Ask me if you do not understand what you are supposed to do! If you do not understand when I am explaining the assignment, ask – chances are someone else is just as confused!
- LISTEN when I am talking!! Much of the information is given in multiple ways: verbally, written, and demonstrated. The most important points will be discussed - so LISTEN!!-Come to class prepared and ready to learn.
-Complete all assignments and hand each assignment in at the proper due date and time. If you skip an assignment, or just never hand it in, you will receive a zero for that assignment!
-Practice respect and tolerance for each other in the classroom.Homework
Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class. You will usually be given part of the class period to start your homework. If you do not understand a concept, please see me. If you do not turn in a homework assignment, it will result in a grade of zero for that assignment. I cannot grade something that is in your locker, backpack, or at home!
Attendance
If a student misses multiple, unexcused classes, the absences will in turn reflect a lower class average. Students are expected to make up any missed work. If you are absent on the day of an exam, you will be required to make it up in the testing center. All homework due during your absence will be due upon your return.
