    The Research-Based Argument Essay

This unit teaches students the importance to argue with logic as well as passion. Students are expected to structure their writing so that it includes claims that are supported by reasons that are backed by evidence. Evidence is sorted, weighed, and ordered. Students are asked to suspend judgement, to read critically, to note-take, in order to build an argument, then to revise, rethink, and rebuild.

    • Investigating to Understand an Argument
    • Using Evidence to Build Arguments
    • Using Quotations to Bolster an Argument
    • Balancing Evidence with Analysis
