Answers
1)  Q Is there fluoride in the village water?
A
No. Currently, the village of Remsen does not fluoridate its water supply.
2)  Q What years are students required to have a physical?
A
NYS mandates that all students who are new enterers, and students in grades K, 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 10th are required to have a physical.
3)  Q Does my child have to have a physical in order to play interscholastic sports?
A
Yes. A physical is required each year if your child/athlete is involved in interscholastic sports. The physical is valid for one year from the exam date but may be carried through the end of the sport's season in which it expires.
4)  Q Can our own health care provider do the physical, or does the school do the physicals?
A
Both. For continuity of care it is always better to see your own health care provider annually. It is important, however, to make sure apt.s are scheduled timely so that your athlete always has a current physical on file and that he/she may begin each sport season on time. A copy of the exam must be sent in to school for your child's health record to be current.
Physicals are also offered in school with our nurse practitioner who comes to us through B.O.C.E.S. She comes to our school approximately every 2 weeks.
5)  Q Can my child get fluoride in school?
A
Yes. Through the NYS Dept. of Dental Health, Remsen offers a fluoride mouth rinse and chewable tablet program to grades K-6.
6)  Q My child had chicken pox. Does he still need the vaccine?
A
No. If your child has had chicken pox, he will not need the vaccine, but you will have to provide the school with a health care provider's documentation that he has had the disease.
7)  Q My Dr. doesn't have record of my child having had chicken pox. What do I do?
A
You can request that a titer be drawn to see if your child has immunity to the chicken pox which would indicate that he/she had the disease. This is a simple blood test. Documentation of the titer can then be submitted to the school as proof of immunity.
8)  Q My child is in third grade. Do I need to worry about proof of chicken pox or the vaccine?
A
Yes. The current NYS law states students born on or after Jan.1, 1994 and entering or repeating the 6th grade starting in Sept. 2005 will need proof of vaccine or immunity. When your child enters 6th grade this documentation will be necessary. Get started now.
9)  Q My child has mentioned an athletic trainer. Who and what does the athletic trainer do?
A
We are privileged to have the services or Mr. Tim Abraham, a certified athletic trainer, who comes to us through Dr. Moretz's service at the Slocum Dickson Medical Group. He comes to our high school once every week and evaluates sports injuries that may have occurred on the field of play or practice and makes recommendations for care of the injury. If your son or daughter has seen or would like to be seen by the trainer, they can talk to their coach or Mrs. Hamlin in the health office to set up an apt.
